UV-Cured Hardwood Floor Finish Explained
Traditional floor finishes cure the same way paint does — by evaporation. Solvents and water leave the finish over hours or days, and the coating stays soft and vulnerable until they do. UV-cured finish uses a different chemistry: it hardens through a light-triggered reaction, not evaporation, and that reaction takes seconds instead of days.
How UV Curing Works
A UV-curable finish contains compounds that link together and harden the instant they're exposed to ultraviolet light of the right wavelength. Instead of waiting for solvents to leave the coating, the installer passes a UV lamp over the freshly applied finish and it sets almost immediately. There's no open window of time where the finish is still soft, off-gassing, or vulnerable to dust settling into it.
That's the whole difference in mechanism: traditional finishes lose their liquid content to become solid; UV-cured finishes chemically link into a solid state on contact with light.
